How to Recover from a Chemical Peel

Chemical Peels | Skin & Laser Surgery Center of New EnglandWhether you have acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, or are just worried about skin cell turnover, we at Skin & Laser Surgery Center have a fast, easy, and effective treatment for you: chemical peels.

Typically derived from glycolic acid, chemical peels are an easy ten minute (on average) treatment that is designed to target the top few layers of your skin. After about a week on average, your skin will start to peel— which means that the chemical peel is doing its job. As your skin peels, newer, healthier, and more collagen filled skin will take its place. And after a few chemical peels, you will really start to notice a difference in the feel and appearance of your skin.  But because chemical peels can make your skin feel a bit sensitive, it’s important that you do the following for about a week afterward.

Avoid the Sun

Yes, a little Vitamin D can go a long way for your mental health, your skin, and your overall health, but after a chemical peel, make sure that you are staying out of the sun. Because your skin is extra sensitive, it makes you more prone to burning which can cause scarring and permanent sun damage.

Wear Sunscreen

Even if you’re practically hiding inside after your chemical peel to avoid a sunburn, make sure that you are still wearing sunscreen. Even when you’re driving in the car or sitting close to a window, sunscreen.

Chemical peels can do wonders for your skin, but they can sometimes dry it out. Which is why we encourage our patients to wear a thick moisturizer both morning and night. The moisture will help soothe your skin and keep it hydrated in the process.

Avoid Harsh Products

If you normally use any glycolic acid, retinol, or any other skin care products that can make your skin feel sensitive, try avoiding them while your skin is healing from your chemical peel. IN some instances, we may recommend that you even go off of these topical creams a few weeks before your chemical peel.
